Dating your college roommate

One— you live happily ever after as a couple that might as well be married. Having carnal knowledge of each other, they are no longer just housemates. I call it The Incest Taboo and it is my fourth principle for living with housemates successfully. It might happen that two people who get to know each other in the daily rhythms of life find themselves falling in love.

Or they became very close when they both had relationships break up and, well, you know.. ” The problem for housemates who have sex is that the relationship changes. How do they manage it if one person wants to break up? For housemates to live together comfortably, it is good to impose a complete and utter taboo on sex with each other.

And if you can’t have a heart-to-heart real conversation about life and love, then you don’t have the communication to manage the changed relationship.

If you are going to have a love affair, one of you should move out first, then see if the relationship works. They met in a group home and started really liking each other.

Will they leave the dreaded sticky notes or will they tell you?

So guest expectations are important to set up, especially letting them know how many people and when they’re coming over. How will your roommate remind you that you need to clean it or that you should leave more time to prepare in the morning?

If you are an introvert you may expect to be in the room alone quite a bit and if your roommate is an extrovert there may always be people in your room, depriving you of your alone time.

Even if you are both introverts there can be issues when wanting alone time. The last thing you want is no time to the room by yourself, so setting up a schedule for times to be alone in the room is a must.

So the best thing to do in this situation is set up a temperature you both agree on in the room.

It’s always fun to bond over music, it’s an easy topic that anyone can relate to.
